So you noticed some big names missing from the lists? A few major celebrities chose to either fly by the media lines and audience (Garth Brooks and James Gandolfini) or skip the Red Carpet altogether, as was the case with Elizabeth Taylor (understandably), Bette Midler, Bob Dylan, Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman.
Ms. Taylor, arriving in a wheelchair through a private entrance, was absolutely determined to present the award for Best Picture of the Year, in spite of concerns backstage about her health. She went on, as a Grande Dame would, and proceeded to provide the most entertaining minutes of the broadcast.
Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman, both presenters at this year's show, didn't talk nor spend much time together during or after the broadcast, to the surprise of many insiders. Nicole watched a large part of the show on the monitors in the Green Room, but when it came time
for Tom Cruise to present the award for Best Performance By An
Actress In a Supporting Role In a Motion Picture (which
Kate Hudson won for Almost Famous), Nicole turned away from
the monitors. Even when told by friends that Tom was on stage,
Nicole chose not to watch that particular segment of the show.
It also appeared, at least to this writer, that Nicole was not at her
best, appearing pale and drawn (color returning to her cheeks only
